Angelina Jolie Opens Up About Her Divorce And Reveals Other Family Troubles

Angelina Jolie has spoken out about her ongoing divorce from Brad Pitt, and revealed that she was diagnosed last year with Bell’s palsy, a medical condition which can cause temporary paralysis of the facial muscles.

According to the actress, the Bell’s palsy, which she says she has now successfully cured through acupuncture, caused one side of her face to droop.

“Sometimes women in families put themselves last,” she told Vanity Fair in a new interview, speaking about her diagnosis, “until it manifests itself in their own health.”

Previously, Jolie, who is 42, underwent a preventative double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery due to a gene mutation that means she is at an increased risk of breast cancer. She has also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed preventively, as the same gene mutation puts her at a higher risk of ovarian cancer.

The decision was triggered after blood tests, taken while she was filming By The Sea, suggested that could have cancer. When further tests revealed this was not the case, Jolie told Vanity Fair that she dropped to her knees in relief, before making the appointment to have her ovaries taken out.

“I went into the actual surgery happy as they come. I was skipping. Because at that point it was just preventative,” she said.

In the interview, the actress and UN goodwill ambassador also opened up a little about her separation from Brad Pitt, and the effect it has had on the couple’s six children.

Speaking about the period leading up to the split, in the summer of 2016, she said: “Things got bad.”

“I didn’t want to use that word… Things became ‘difficult,” she then clarified.

Although she did not speak directly about what led to the separation, she also denied claims that Pitt wanted a more settled, traditional lifestyle.

“[Our lifestyle] was not in any way a negative. That was not the problem. That is and will remain one of the wonderful opportunities we are able to give our children,” she said. “They’re six very strong-minded, thoughtful, worldly individuals. I’m very proud of them.”

“They’ve been very brave. They were very brave, ” she later added, without offering further detail.

“We’re all just healing from the events that led to the filing . . . They’re not healing from divorce. They’re healing from some… from life, from things in life.”

Jolie and Pitt were married in 2014, and split last year. Jolie filed for a divorce, the terms of which are still being negotiated, in September 2016.
